What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

Clear Autumn Day

Although there was lots of rain the day before, this morning the sun miraculously reappeared for our bench-making workshop.
While the men made the benches, the women held an elegant Jonet salon.
The children also participated after returning from their school arts festival.
Lunch consisted of new season's rice sent from Kyoto and delicious potatoes sent from Hokkaido. We used local Nomura cooking oil to make the pork miso soup, and we ate the new rice with salted, dried seaweed from Chiba. It was absolutely delicious.

Thick fog stretching from Matsushima to Tsuyama.

Since the children were at the arts festival, the adults made the Christmas decorations.

With students from Tohoku Institute of Technology at the centre, the men make benches.
Assistance also came from Kitakami city, Iwate.
The squared timber on the right was provided by Tokyo University of the Arts and the timber on the left was given by the Tohoku Institute of Technology.

The women happily accepted the challenge of making aroma-spray.

Tea time after the salon.
Everyone said the coffee was especially delicious.

Benches were installed both inside and outside the assembly hall.

This toilet seat isn't heated and feels very cold against bare skin.

The Omori shop is still open for business despite being surrounded by water.
