What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

'Ema' Salon for Children

We organised an 'Ema' wishing cards salon for children.

This child was born just before the disaster and has grown so fast.

We discovered these Christmas decorations on the fence of the parking lot.

'We will be done before the year ends,' said the person overseeing the construction work. But because the insulation work was not included in the original design and calculation for this temporary housing unit, that work could only begin once the existing facade cover had again been removed. It makes you want to cry.

This man was once a boatbuilder. Now, he constructs shelves
for the temporary housing.

The wind-shields in front of the doors have now been completed.
However, in order to find out the name of the person living there, one has to go very close and peek into the porch.
And if the door is locked, post cannot be delivered.

Gritting salt for the winter has been prepared.
Since the salon last month, there has already been snow and sleet.

Personal markers at one home

Additional outside shelving for the very small temporary houses
