What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

To all of you who donated items

Thank you so much for your speedy delivery of items!

(This is part of a letter of gratitude to those who steadfastly supported us and sent donations in April before the opening of Miyagi Jonet)

I was amazed at how many donations came in, even without sending out much of a request. I had simply said we could take donations at my house. (Now we have a large storage room full).

When donations arrived, we didn’t record them, but just immediately delivered them.  We did this for days.

For those on email, we’ve thanked you, but for those who are not on the web, we’ve been belated in thanking you, and for that we apologize.  We tried to contact those who made donations by telephone, but often got no answer so we are sending out letters of thanks instead.

To Kyushu’s Ishimoto-san, thank you for your swift donations.

We received mountains of donations from Yokota-san’s facilities.  We’ve already delivered them to Onagawa, Tsukihama, Ishinomaki, Higashi-Matsushima, etc. Thank you so much.
We received various donations from the staff of the Sendai Foundation for Gender Equality on a number of occasions. Thank you so much. We’ve already delivered them to Onagawa, Tsukihama, and Ishinomaki.

We delivered the incontinence protection underwear and pads and other donations (underwear for the elderly, underwear for the staff, skin care and hair care products, and fruits) to Ishinomaki’s group home for those with Alzheimer’s disease (a nurse colleague of mine is managing the home).

During the tsunami, 18 patients got up on a table, but their legs got wet. They’ve been moved to an observation facility, and now they’ve been lined up on the floor to sleep. Two have died from the exhaustion of the chill.

Friends at Hearty’s gave many donations and have helped with deliveries.  Thank you.
To Kobayashi-san of Childline-Miyagi, thank you so much for children’s clothes, children’s shoes, adult clothes, many foodstuffs, and rice.

(There are many, many more so I will put supporters’ names on the webpage. Even then I may miss some and I apologize for that.)
