What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

A Tiny Kamaboko Shop

The city in Halloween atmosphere

Awano-Kamaboko-ten is a tiny shop for boiled fish paste. But local folks say that it is the No. 1 Kamaboko shop in the area. They make Kamaboko from fish fresh out of the sea in the morning. So what they produce depends on the fish type available and the weather. There was even a time when I found the shop closed after arriving there with a hope of eating triangular deep-fried Kamaboko.
I could enjoy a happy moment of eating hot, deep-fried Kamaboko at the shop in Ishinomaki before, but it had to shut down after the disaster.
Now, well before schedule, the Kamaboko machine are ready and the shop can finally resume selling its products.

They told me proudly of reopening the shop.

The shop staff seem to be beaming with joy, as they take care of their returning customers. The deep-fried Kamaboko is likely to become available at the end of the year as I was told.

I stop to check it every time when passing by.
