What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

Heading to Temporary Housing How to Support the Residents

The Jonet Salon paid a visit to the temporary housing unit in Natori. A lady in her 30’s, a board member of the residents’ association, asked us to pass on their request for support for the forthcoming winter. Here is how to make a donation: Order a new product online at Amazon and have it delivered to their current residence. I had a look at the website, and found that you can purchase supplies of 500 yen to several thousand yen online and have them directly delivered by Amazon. A convenient way, indeed. Below is the message from the lady. Y

“Help us get relief supplies for winter”
Yuriage is a port located at the mouth of Natori River. The whole city was swept away by the Tsunami. Hakozuka-sakura Temporary Homes, comprising 102 households, is the first temporary housing in Natori City. The buildings are constructed with only one layer of floor panel, which allows outside air to directly blow into the rooms. Such structure will not protect us from the Tohoku winter with outside air temperatures of -5 C. We are greatly concerned whether our residents, many of whom are elderly, will be able to survive the first time winter in these temporary homes.
We would very much appreciate it, if you could purchase relief goods through Amazon online and send them to our homes. On behalf of all the disaster victims, we ask you for your generous support and help.
