What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

From recent salons

Damaged cars are being arranged in the town of Minamisanriku. No matter which town, it seems that disposing of cars happens last.

The school bus is operating in the city of Kesennuma.
A thick piece of driftwood became lodged in the veranda of this building in Onagawa.
It is still in the process of being demolished.

A baby born after the disaster in Onagawa.
Unperturbed by her mother and big brother's chatter, she sleeps soundly.

A child playing with a male staff member in Onagawa.
For a long time he would throw things at the staff as a way of dealing with the stress he was under.

In Onagawa, this child can't stop marvelling at the contents of his bag. It contains a towel, handkerchief, soap and stationery all printed with cartoon characters. He was also given a large picture book.

At the salon in Onagawa we did body art for the children. The art on this boy's leg represents his wish for Japan to recover.
The hand massages were very well-received by the adults, many of whom have been attending funerals lately.

At Onagawa they received this present of a walker for the girls play area.
