What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

For Those in Their 70s and 80s

We heard from the 70 and 80 year olds that the rice was too chewy and they would like food that’s aimed towards the elderly, if not to cut it up into small pieces. They need clothes that are suitable for seniors too.

However the biggest problem that they have is the psychological trauma that they have experienced at this age. The seriousness of this can be felt through their acting younger than those around them.

They all said that they had no hope, nothing they wanted to do. They wondered how they would live from now on.

Many said something along the lines of their daughters, who had married and moved to another prefecture, wanting them to move in. But when these seniors thought about the problems they might have living together and the fact they wouldn’t be able to see their friends, they decided to live by themselves in the temporary housing.

At Jonet, we deliver lots of things, keeping in mind items that people would be happy to receive, such as underwear and women’s products that come in handy when they get sick. By taking special care with personal items, we hope that it will make them feel better, even if just a little bit.

She happened to be with her son at the time of the tsunami and they escaped with him pulling her arm shouting “Run! Run!”

Up until now, no-one had really thought about rubber boots that were essential for going out in or working in the grounds. Everyone appreciates them on moving to the temporary housing. It’s difficult to get women’s rubber boots
