What is Miyagi-Jonet?

MIYAGI JO-NET (Miyagi Women’s Support Network) is a non-profit organisation supporting women in the Tohoku area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. We aim to connect the women in the affected areas with women and supporters from around Japan and the world. To this end, we are cooperating with various other women’s and relief organisations. Our many projects are designed to help women individually in reconstructing their lives and livelihoods. We thereby hope to brighten their everyday a little bit. We also collect relief/support goods and other donations to distribute them among the women and families affected by the disaster. Through regular meetings, our ‘salons,’ and consultations, we gain insight into women’s needs and concerns, and propose adequate measures to local and regional administrations.

Many of Miyagi Jonet’s members are women affected themselves by the disaster.

Thank you so much

To Miyagi Jonet,

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule yesterday to show me around Ishinomaki and Minamisanriku-cho.

Even though I had seen the devastation in those places on TV, the first time I actually went there, I deeply felt how scary tsunamis are and how much the people there must have suffered.

The tremendous efforts everybody at Jonet and other volunteers like you undertake to provide the people in the disaster areas with relief goods and emotional support, while you yourselves are affected by the disaster, are truly outstanding, I felt. Even though I was only there looking around for a single day, I was exhausted both physically and mentally when the day was over. I bow my head in respect, thinking about all of you who continue to support the affected region with great compassion, despite the state that your own homes are still in after the disaster.

Please take good care of your own health, too, and make sure not to overwork yourselves.

I look forward to meeting you again in Miyagi.

Again, thank you very much for yesterday.   (quoted from an email we received)
